Riverdale

The 77 communities in Chicago, Illinois, are located south of the city. Riverdale was incorporated as a neighborhood in the Chicago City of Chicago, IL. With 7,359 residents, Riverdale residents’ lifestyle offers a smoky suburban feel. The majority of them lease their homes.

Riverdale has a long and rich history, like the other communities and, more importantly, Chicago and Dolton. The communities that make up Dolton, along with Riverdale, were previously part of one community until they were joined in 1892. Presently, Riverdale includes neighborhoods popularly known as Highlawn as well as Ivanhoe.

Indians were exiled from the region through George Dolton. He established himself on the Little Calumet River in 1835 and operated a ferry until 1842 when a bridge toll was built and was named Riverdale Crossing.

Riverdale was initially a farm region after Germans, and Dutch residents settled in the area in the 1840s and 1850s and started as farmers and loggers. The Illinois Central Railroad came through Riverdale in 1852; six railways had served the region. The area was accessible in 1880.

Diverse industries developed over the years, like liquor stores and barrel makers, lumber yards and ice homes, sugar refineries, and cattle pens that attracted Irish, Russians, Germans, and Swedish residents to Riverdale. The dredging of the Little Calumet River and the growing development of the Cal-Sag Channel between 1911 and 1922 fueled the neighborhood’s growth. In 1919, the first artificially iced plant was built; the ice plant located in Riverdale was owned by the Federal Ice Refrigerating Company held.

In the 1920s, Central Illinois advanced its game, providing more excellent commuter service to Chicago. The expansion of residential areas, for instance, the creation of Ivanhoe. When Ivanhoe was a victim of the Great Depression, residential construction stopped. The 1980s saw a growth of African American communities looking for better locations for housing and schools to educate their children. The population of Riverdale was 15,055, and the African American population was up to the 87 percent threshold.
